About the SIGCSA Turfgrass/Scholarship Fundraiser

The SIGCSA annually holds a fundraiser each fall and makes a yearly donation to Turfgrass Research and makes scholarships available to SIGCSA Members. This year the SIGCSA donated 2 $1,000 scholarship applicants for college tuition The SIGCSA offers $1,000 Legacy college scholarships for children or grandchildren as a benefit to our members. The SIGCSA also donated a $2,000 turfgrass scholarship to Blake Conway who is enrolled in turfgrass program at Penn State.

2023 Annual Fundraiser Golf Event

The 2023 Fundraiser Golf Event was held at  Spencer T Olin GC  in Alton IL on September 19th with Tim Johnson being our Host Superintendent along with Assistant Supt. Tom Bratten.

Spencer T Olin GC GM Mary Campbell and Head Golf Professional Sam Lee provided an outstanding venue in hosting the Annual Fundraiser. A lunch pulled pork buffet was served before golf. Plenty of appetizers consisting of chicken wings, toasted ravioli, cheese plate and meatballs were served following play and at the awards presentation.

Participating Event Sponsors for Food & Beverages were Advanced Turf Solutions, BASF, Envu, Heartland Turf Farms, MTI Distributing, Site One, Steve Dickinson (aka “The Doctor”) & Syngenta

The winning score was -16 under 56 by the team representing Green Hills CC (Chris Ashby, Tom Williams, Matt Hefly and Jonathan Stowers) in scorecard playoff over the team from Clay County CC captained by Jason Jones.

108 players participated. and 53 $100 Hole Sponsors provided their generous support of the Annual Fundraiser.

MTI Distributing sponsored the closest to the hole prize on all par 3’s ($50 Pro Shop Gift Certificate) $2,900 in Pro Shop Gift Certificates was paid out.

Proceeds from this year’s Fundraiser are to benefit the Legacy Scholarship Foundation and Turfgrass Research which is yet TBD by the Board of Directors. This year’s Gene Schulte Memorial Legacy Scholarship recipient is Brady Betz the Granddaughter of Superintendent Ray Heil of Red Hawk GC. A $1,000 tuition Scholarship check will be presented to Brady at the SIGCSA October Annual Meeting on October 17th at Bent Oak GC in Breese, IL

The 2022 SIGCSA Annual Turfgrass/Scholarship Fundraiser  Golf Event was held on Wednesday Sept. 28th at Gateway National Golf links in Madison, IL

Golf format was 4 person teams competing for prizes in 3 flights, skins game and closest to the hole competitions.

Special thank you to Gateway National GL for hosting this year’s event and kudos to the grounds Staff Steve Leach (Director of Agronomy), Kyle Stratman (Superintendent), Nick Toliver (Asst. Superintendent) and their staff for preparing and setting up the course for a great day of golf. 144 players enjoyed a great day of golf and camaraderie.

The 2020 SIGCSA Annual Turfgrass/Scholarship Fundraiser  Golf Event was held on Thursday Sept. 24th at Spencer T Olin G C in Alton, IL

Golf format was 4 person teams competing for prizes in 3 flights, skins game and closest to the hole competitions.

Special thank you to Spencer T Olin GC for hosting this years event and kudos to our Host Superintendent Tim Johnson and his staff for preparing and setting up the course for a great day of golf. 96 players enjoyed a great day of golf and camaraderie despite Covid-19 restrictions limiting some of the usual Fundraiser activities.

About the SIGCSA Turfgrass/Scholarship Fundraiser

The SIGCSA annually holds a fundraiser each fall and makes a yearly donation to Turfgrass Research and makes scholarships available to SIGCSA Members. This year the SIGCSA donated $1,000 to scholarship applicants for college tuition and plan to donate $2,000 to the University of Missouri Turfgrass Program in conjunction with the MVGCSA to benefit a Turfgrass Research project beneficial to our region. The SIGCSA offers $1,000 Legacy college scholarships for children or grandchildren as a benefit to our members.

2018 Annual SIGCSA Fundraiser Golf Event

2018 Annual Turfgrass/Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Scramble was conducted Wednesday September 13th at Tamarack Golf Club in O’Fallon, IL.

116 players enjoyed a great day of golf at Tamarack Golf Club.

The day began with a lunch buffet at 11 followed by a 18 hole 4 person scramble. Appetizers and awards followed the golf.

Special thanks to the management of Tamarack GCl, course Supt. Brian Borah and Golf Professionals  Steve Liter and Mark Morphy for providing an excellent venue for the Annual Fundraiser.

Through the generosity of all participants, Affiliate Vendors and Hole Sponsors this years Fundraiser was able to award 1 Gene Schulte Memorial Scholarship and raise money for Turfgrass Research at the University of Missouri Turf Program.

The 2013 Annual Turfgrass/Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Event was conducted at Sunset Hills Country Club, Edwardsville, IL on Monday October 7th with Mike Daugherty serving as Host Golf Course Superintendent. As always the SIGCSA would like to extend its gratitude to all of the paticipants, sponsors and the entire staff at Sunset Hills Country Club for their contributions to make the event a success.

The SIGCSA Annual Turfgrass Fundraiser Golf Scramble was held Thursday September 20th at Kokopelli Golf Club, with Josh Gaebe serving as Host Superintendent.

There were 3 Gene Schulte Memorial Scholarship Award winners in 2011. The scholarships were awarded at the SIGCSA Fundraiser at Annbriar Golf Club on September 29th to:

  • Tyler Daugherty, son of Mike Daugherty of Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, IL
  • Christian Gundlach, daughter of Greg Gundlach of Heartland Turf Farms in Columbia, IL
  • Alexandra McDonald, daughter of Jeff and Carolyn McDonald of Twin Oaks Golf Club in Greenville, IL

I am a freshman at S.L.U. studying nursing and this check has helped cover book expenses and some tuition costs.  My entire life my Dad has been a golf course Superintendent. The 2010 Gene Schulte Memorial Scholarship winner was Andrew McDonald, son of Jeff and Carolyn McDonald of Twin Oaks Golf Club. The Scholarship was awarded at the SIGCSA Fundraiser in September at Green Hills Country Club.

Scholarships Awarded to; Chelsi Braye, Ashley Rakers $1,000.00 ea

June 2009 marked the passing of longtime SIGCSA Executive Director Mr. Gene Schulte and to honor the contributions and the dedication to the SIGCSA the Legacy Scholarship has been renamed the Gene Schulte Memorial Scholarship.

There were two applicants for the inaugural scholarship of the Gene Schulte Memorial Scholarship and these were awarded at the SIGCSA 2009 Fundraiser held at Sunset Hills CC in Edwardsville, IL.  The recipients were Chelsi Braye daughter of Bryan Braye Superintendent of Greenville CC in Greenville,IL and Ashley Rakers daughter of  Paul Smith Superintendent of Bent Oak Golf Course in Breese, IL. Congratulations!!
