The Passing of SIGCSA Honorary Member James Ashby

The Passing of SIGCSA Honorary Member James Ashby

It is of great sorrow and remorse that I post the sad news of the passing of longtime friend and SIGCSA Honorary Member James Ashby on Tuesday December 29th.

The Association wishes to express our sincere condolences to the Ashby family.

Jim was a founding Charter Member of the SIGCSA and served as President and numerous years on the Board of Directors and chaired many committees.

Jim was instrumental in inaugurating and implementing fundraiser activities that benefitted turfgrass research for Southern Illinois and the SIGCSA Legacy Scholarship Fund that benefits the sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of SIGCSA Members

Jim “Jimbo” was the heart and soul of the Association as he hardly missed any Association event.  Jim tutored and mentored many individuals in the turfgrass industry. With his wealth of knowledge in turfgrass comprised of “old school” methods as well as keeping up with the latest technology he was the go to guy by many of his peers for any of their turfgrass problems. His presence and camaraderie at Association events will be greatly missed.

Jim was voted SIGCSA Honorary Membership at the June Meeting in 2018 for his outstanding contributions and tireless service to the Association following his retirement from Rend Lake GC.

Rest in peace Jimbo.

Jim’s obituary and info concerning flowers, memorials and visitation can be found by going to the Hughey Funeral Home website at hugheyfh.com  or phone 618 242 3348
