Assistant Supt Position Available at Rend Lake GC

ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

The Rend Lake Conservancy District is accepting applications for an Assistant Golf
Course Superintendent. This position is a great opportunity for someone who is highly
motivated and experienced, and who can replace the current Golf Course
Superintendent who expects to retire in the next 2-3 years. In order to achieve a
seamless continuity of operations, the current superintendent will help mentor and
prepare the Assistant Superintendent to transition into a higher leadership role. To
achieve this goal, the Assistant Superintendent works collaboratively with the entire golf
team and assists with the day-to-day oversight of the maintenance, operation, and
management of a 27-hole golf course. This person will also help set maintenance
standards to ensure that playing conditions and customer experience expectations are
met while also being commensurate with a golf resort experience. This is a full-time
exempt position.
Duties:
 Assists the Golf Course Superintendent with the responsibility of managing
and maintaining properties, which may include:
o Golf course and practice area
o Maintenance equipment
o Clubhouse grounds and landscaping
 Manage all areas of the golf course in the absence of the Golf Course
Superintendent.
 Apply golf course chemicals when needed.
 Mow greens, fairways, and other areas when needed.
 Works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent with preparation of the
annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvements of club
properties.
 Approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to ensure
operating and capital expenses remain within the approved budgets.
 Works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to keep accurate and
complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance
procedures, pesticide applications, etc.
 Assists the Golf Course Superintendent with planning all maintenance and
project work, applying his/her agronomic and administrative expertise to
achieve the club’s maintenance standards and long-range goals.
 Assists the Golf Course Superintendent with overseeing scheduling of
personnel and equipment to accomplish the work, including part-time and
union staff.
 Keeps all buildings and equipment well maintained.
 Assists the Golf Course Superintendent with frequent inspections of the golf
course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are
being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.
 Ensures cleanliness of all facilities under their control.
 Manages safety to strive for zero accidents.
 Performs other duties as required.

Desirable Training and Experience:
Minimum Job Requirements:
 Past experience managing and operating a golf course maintenance
department when needed without supervision.
 3+ years of golf course maintenance experience.
 2-3 years of management experience.
 2-3 years of pesticide, fungicide, and herbicide management experience.
 2-3 years of fertilizer management experience.
 Knowledge of irrigation systems and repair.
 Knowledge of basic equipment maintenance.
 Possess a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Job Requirements:
 Completion of post-secondary education (certificate, associate’s or
bachelor’s degree) with an emphasis on turf management, horticulture, or
related field.
 Possession of an “Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License”
 Experience in managing budget expenses.

 Good verbal and written communication skills
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
 Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as dirt, dust,
fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, extreme weather conditions, and/or loud noises
 Moderate physical activity. May require some heavy physical work; lifting,
pushing, or pulling required of objects in excess of 50 pounds.
 Must be physically and mentally able to thoroughly complete the required tasks,
in a timely and competent manner.
 Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which
require following basic safety precautions.
 Seasonal peaks in golf play results in long hours during peak months (April –
September).
